Heaven Born: help for coping with early miscarriage

When someone has a miscarriage, it's often hard to know what to say or do. For the person who suffers the miscarriage, it can be an isolating and very emotional time.

After having a miscarriage at 11 weeks, Maureen Day decided part of her healing process would be to help others. In 2002, she started a non-profit project called Heaven Born. This group offers handmade pillows for early miscarriage losses.

Grieving toddlers

Something Happened is for the 2-6 year old whose family has experienced miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant death

Books for toddlers about death:

The Dead Bird by Margaret Wise Brown (author of Goodnight Moon, Runaway Bunny and other classics) is out of print, but is available used. It is a very good introduction to death in the story of several children who find a dead bird. Their sadness is great at first, and they decide to bury the bird, decorate the grave, and say some final goodbyes. Tears are shed, but with time, their happiness returns and at the end, the dead bird is forgotten.

I Miss You is written for 4-7 year olds, but still appropriate to read through with the younger child. It explains death as no longer eating or breathing, that death is a natural part of life, and talks about the emotions we all have.

Something Happened is for the 2-6 year old whose family has experienced miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant death.

Thumpy’s Story in Spanish and English is a book about sibling loss for the 2-4 year old. Thumpy shares his sorrow and questions when his little sister dies.

Naming a miscarried baby

When a baby is miscarried, the parents’ grief may be a very lonely thing, in large part because few people, if anyone, knew the baby’s name. If the baby was miscarried in early pregnancy, a name may not have been chosen yet, and most people may not even know of the pregnancy.

Grieving and mourning our loss involves telling our story, and the lack of a name, or a name no one had yet known, may be a painful situation for the parents.

Book on expressing miscarriage grief & sadness through art

Garden of Hope to open soon

Dawn Waltman knows first-hand the emotions a mother experiences when losing a child to early infant death.

She and her husband, Brian, who have four living children, have lost three babies — two to miscarriage and a little girl, Molly, in a stillbirth.

"We were able to have a funeral and memorial service for (Molly), but the miscarried babies had nothing," Waltman said last week. "It felt like they didn't count and, in society, they don't count. I felt in my heart that these babies can't be forgotten."

Teddy bear drive in East Hanover

EAST HANOVER -- The First Presbyterian Church will hold its annual Teddy Bear drive March 8.

Church members will collect new teddy bears, 12 to 18 inches in height, with no clothing, that will be distributed to hospitals as part of the Joined in Remembrance Program, begun by Lori and John Donaldson.

They will be go to families who've suffered a miscarriage, stillbirth or early infant death. Bears will be collected during the Sunday service from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Ten tips to survive a holiday after the death of a child

Healing the Grieving Heart by Dr. Gloria Horsley

Running away or hiding from your grief during the holidays doesn't work. Below are some simple ways to make coping a little easier.

1. Plan ahead, prioritize events, activities and people, and realize you can't do everything.

2. Ask for help with tasks, even easy ones around the house.

3. You don't have to prove you have holiday spirit. Do as much as you want to do, as simple candle in the window in memory of your child.

4. It's OK not to host holiday events even if you always have. People will understand.

5. Make new traditions to honor your child, in a way that has meaning to you.

6. Remember your surviving children. A holiday can provide normalcy in the midst of mourning.

7. It's OK if you don't get everything you planned done.

8. Shop at off-peak times, over the Internet or ask a friend to help.

9. Participate in a memorial service, like the World Wide Candle Lighting.

10. Remember, the anticipation of the day is usually worse than day itself.

Holiday "gifts" for bereaved families

Holidays can be especially difficult for a family who has lost a child. Here are some ways you can help.

1. Remember the child in cards or in speaking with the family. Mention the child by name. Worse than the pain of remembering is the pain of thinking their child has been forgotten.

2. Understand this holiday may not be like the last and things may not get done.

3. Help the family do routine chores around the house or offer to help with shopping.

4. Make a donation in the name of the child to a charity that has meaning for the family.

5. Help the family find a support group with others who has experienced loss.

6. Consider the surviving children. Offer to take them shopping or to holiday related events.

7. Offer to drive the family to a memorial service.

8. Tell them they are not alone and that you love and care for the family.

The support of others is essential to healing. Many bereaved parents believe that talking to other bereaved parents, whether online or at in-person support groups, is helpful. The following are some support resources.

Lives, though short, remembered

On Wednesday, a small group gathered at Riverview Cemetery outside of Monticello to remember those who passed before them.

But rather than grandparents or parents who lived full lives, those remembered were babies lost to miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal death, and children lost too soon.

Oct. 15 was National Day of Remembrance, and mothers, fathers, siblings and friends honored the day by joining in a candle lighting ceremony that evening.

Graham is one of several Tucson photographers volunteering for NILMDTS. Group volunteers take professional pictures so families can have lasting images of their cherished baby.

"They were so grateful and that is what keeps me going," Graham said.

Some people think it is morbid, but it keeps the child's memory alive, honoring the grief of the family, Graham said.

"I think just about everybody knows somebody who has had a miscarriage, when you hear that word, you don't really think about it more. Now, I think about it and I realize that it is a real person," Graham said.

Families walk to remember infants

Vivienne Treharne, whose son, Christopher Lee, died in the womb in 1999, holds his infant book, which has cards that were placed on her door so nurses and visitors would know she had lost her child. Treharne is one of many who will be at a Walk to Remember on Tuesday at Lake Ella to help raise awareness of National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day.

Asking the Treharnes if they have children is not a simple question.

If you ask Vivienne Treharne, she'll say, "Four, not living."
It's her way of explaining how her four children died before any reached a day old.

Families who suffer miscarriages and infant loss often deal with it quietly. Unprepared for the tragedy, many don't have a funeral because they are unprepared for the expense.

That's why the annual Walk to Remember event Tuesday at Lake Ella is so important, organizers say. It gives these families a chance to honor the memory of their little ones and to talk to a grief counselor.

"A lot of times, friends and family don't know what to say," said Tracy Coomer, fetal and infant mortality project-review coordinator for the Capital Area Healthy Start Coalition, which is putting on the event.

Infants remembered in bereavement walk

Nestled on the outskirts of downtown San Angelo lies a rose garden dedicated to the memory of infants. It will be the final stop in the White Rose Bereavement Group's "Walk to Remember" today.

Stephanie Collins suffered the loss of her daughter Leyla seven years ago and said the group and the walk have helped tremendously in dealing with her daughter's passing.

"I don't know where I would have been without White Rose," Collins said. "I didn't have any friends who had gone through this. And the group was very welcoming. We shared our feelings and cried."

The White Rose Bereavement Group meets on the second Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in Shannon Wellness Center's Ray Delilah Harper Meeting Room.
In December, the group holds a candlelight ceremony on the first Sunday of the month at 6 p.m. in the Baby's Rose Garden.

Naperville's 4th Annual A Walk To Remember

NAPERVILLE, Ill., Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Naperville's 4th Annual A Walk to Remember will be held on Sunday, October 19, 2008, at the Riverwalk Grand Pavilion in Naperville. The theme of this year's Walk is "Because of You."

Registration for the Walk will begin at 8:30 AM, a memorial service will be held at 9:30 AM, and A Walk to Remember will start at 10:15 AM, which is a two-mile, leisurely walk along the Naperville Riverwalk.

Walk proceeds will benefit the development of the Wings of Hope Angel Garden at Edward Hospital and the Edward Foundation SHARE Program. The SHARE Program is a national and local non-profit pregnancy and infant loss support group with a mission to raise public awareness, promote research, and provide support to parents and families whose lives have been touched by miscarriage, stillbirth, or neonatal loss.

Each year, 1 out of every 4 pregnancies ends in miscarriage, 26,000
children die as a result of stillbirth in the United States, and another
19,000 children succumb to neonatal death. Thousands of families leave the hospital each year without their child -- with empty arms, broken hearts, and a love for their deceased child that will never diminish. Help SHARE continue its mission touching lives, healing hearts, and developing an angel garden to serve as a place of reflection and hope.

There are many ways to support A Walk to Remember; including walking,
sponsoring the Walk, donating raffle items, and serving as a volunteer.

Those who have experienced a loss and their family and friends are encouraged to SHARE their tears, WALK to honor, and REMEMBER with love.

Area getting its own Angel of Hope

In Richard Paul Evans's 1993 novel, "The Christmas Box," a young couple befriend their elderly employer. They learn about the young child she lost decades earlier and of a statue she erected in her daughter's memory in a nearby cemetery. The statue depicts a winged, childlike angel, with arms outstretched to heaven.

Since the publication of that novel -- and its adaptation into a made-for-television movie -- individuals and organizations across the nation have erected identical statues in their own communities. The statues have become places where parents who have lost young children to illness or accidents (or whose pregnancies ended in stillbirth or miscarriage) come to mourn and feel a connection with their own "little angels."

To date, 72 angels have been placed throughout the U.S. Every Dec. 6, thousands of people gather at those angels for vigils. Currently, the nearest statue is in a cemetery in West Lafayette, nearly 90 minutes away.

'Walk to Remember' is Saturday

a memorial to those who have had a baby die through miscarriage, stillbirth or newborn death

The annual Walk To Remember is planned for Saturday at the Traverse Area District Library.

The walk, scheduled for 11 a.m., is a memorial to those who have had a baby die through miscarriage, stillbirth or newborn death. The walk gives families the opportunity to remember and honor the memory of their wanted and wished for child.

Families will gather at the library beginning in the community room just off the front entrance at 11 a.m. Participants will then move to the garden and hang ribbons on a tree in memory of their babies, followed by a walk along the Boardman Trail. A short program with a speaker, music and refreshments is also planned.

Volunteers from Munson Medical Center’s RTS Bereavement Services sponsors this event. The department offers support to parents and families from the community who have had this type of a loss.

Children’s Memorial Healing Garden a place for prayer and comfort

Despite no longer having an earthly presence, today in Forest Lake the young ones ages can be remembered eternally at the Children’s Memorial Healing Garden

It’s always sad when a loved one is taken away from the world too soon. Losing a child is the greatest pain any parent could suffer.

Despite no longer having an earthly presence, today in Forest Lake the young ones ages can be remembered eternally at the Children’s Memorial Healing Garden.

After St. Peter’s Catholic Church traditional mass at Calvary Cemetery on Memorial Day, a special ceremony was held for parishioners and the public to witness the blessing of the garden.

Within the sacred grounds, there is now a place where families can grieve the painful loss of a child to miscarriage, stillborn and abortion. They can receive comfort from the Lord and feel at peace knowing the child is safe in the arms of Jesus Christ.

Spearheaded by Angela Brand, it was nearly four years ago when she and other like-minded friends at St. Peter’s began discussing the idea of a memorial garden open to all denominations at the cemetery owned by the church.

Share in helping those who have lost young ones

Each year, the Celebrity Challenge Bass Tournament committee chooses an organization to sponsor at its annual tournament to help bring awareness to the group and promote its cause. For the second consecutive year, the organization has chosen to support Share of Northeast Louisiana Pregnancy & Infant Loss Support, Inc.

The seventh annual Celebrity Challenge Bass Tournament will be held on Saturday, June 7 on the Ouachita River. Launch will be from Forsythe Park in Monroe. Other activities include a 1 or 3-mile walk for Remembrance and Hope, a memorial service and balloon release, door prizes and an auction.
