Recurrent miscarriage

Recurrent miscarriageWhen you have been trying to conceive for one month, one year or several years, the most joyous and happy moment that you can feel is when you see a positive home pregnancy test after missing a period. But the excitement and elation can quickly be erased by the negative news received by a doctor either over the phone or at the office, informing you that you have miscarried. A pregnancy loss or miscarriage is very heart-breaking, frustrating and devastating for any woman to go through once, let alone multiple times.

Coping with miscarriage

Early pregnancy loss — or miscarriage — is the loss of a pregnancy before 20 weeks. Estimates suggest that up to 50% to 75% of fertilized eggs are lost, many before a woman even misses her menstrual period. Among confirmed pregnancies in the US, between 15% and 20% are miscarried.

For more information, the ACOG Patient Education Pamphlet “Early Pregnancy Loss” is available in English and Spanish at www.acog.org/publications/

Surviving a miscarriage

Having a miscarriage is not only physically difficult, but it has an emotional impact, as well. It is normal to feel a range of feelings that may include anger, sadness, guilt or shock.

Keep in mind that being around friends and family who have children may be painful.

During this time, it is OK to give yourself permission to miss social gatherings or family events.

Men and women deal with loss differently, so couples need to share their feelings and thoughts openly with each other. A pregnancy loss can affect relationships. It can bring you closer or rip you apart. It is important that you both give yourself time and space to heal. You and your spouse may go through the stages of grief. The grieving process can take days, weeks or months.

Couple’s grief for babies

Couples grief for babiesJO HALL never expected supporting Red Nose Day would one day help her in hour of need, but it has.

The Avonsleigh woman has been struggling to cope after
miscarrying two babies in two years.

Ms Hall may not have given birth, but she still grieves.

She couldn’t believe it when she lost her first child in 2007 to discover that SIDS and Kids offered counselling services.

“When you are in hospital they give you a booklet to read about miscarriages … I saw it was produced by SIDS,” Ms Hall said.

Embryos that self-destruct can lead to miscarriages

Embryos that self-destruct can lead to miscarriagesMiscarriage, the most common type of pregnancy loss, can be a horrible and hugely depressing experience for any woman. But, ever wondered why do women have more miscarriages than females of other species? It’s all in the chromosomes, a new study says.

Researchers in Belgium have found that it’s normal for human embryos to contain cells with the wrong number of chromosomes, which can actually cause them to self-destruct. As women age, their eggs are more likely to have the wrong number of chromosomes, which can lead to miscarriages.

For their study, the researchers examined 23 embryos from nine young, fertile couples who were undergoing IVF for screening purposes and found 21 had chromosomal abnormalities, the New Scientist reported. The study, led by Joris Vermeesch from the Centre for Human Genetics in Leuven, has been published in the latest issue of the Nature Medicine journal.

Abnormal chromosome structure in human embryos is quite common. Chromosomal instability is marked by duplications, deletions, or translocations of whole chromosomes, or of chromosome pieces.

Time of Implantation of the Conceptus and Loss of Pregnancy

Time of Implantation of the Conceptus and Loss of PregnancyABSTRACT

Background: Implantation of the conceptus is a key step in pregnancy, but little is known about the time of implantation or the relation between the time of implantation and the outcome of pregnancy.

Results: There were 199 conceptions, for 95 percent of which (189) we had sufficient data for analysis. Of these 189 pregnancies, 141 (75 percent) lasted at least six weeks past the last menstrual period, and the remaining 48 pregnancies (25 percent) ended in early loss. Among the pregnancies that lasted 6 weeks or more, the first appearance of chorionic gonadotropin occurred 6 to 12 days after ovulation; 118 women (84 percent) had implantation on day 8, 9, or 10. The risk of early pregnancy loss increased with later implantation (P<0.001).>

Among the 102 conceptuses that implanted by the ninth day, 13 percent ended in early loss. This proportion rose to 26 percent with implantation on day 10, to 52 percent on day 11, and to 82 percent after day 11.

Conclusions: In most successful human pregnancies, the conceptus implants 8 to 10 days after ovulation. The risk of early pregnancy loss increases with later implantation.
