After 16 tries, I finally got the baby I wanted

Image: Mum: After 16 tries, I finally got the baby I wantedMaria Pridmore said the arrival of daughter Mia Shannon was ‘a dream come true’.

The 32-year-old said: ‘After the two I lost and all the miscarriages, I never thought I would be gifted with one. She is so precious to us.’

The cancer nurse lost 16 babies over a 13-year period and gave up on the idea of a family after the stillbirth of daughter Shannon and death of son Kia at the age of two weeks in 2009.

It is written from the patient's perspective, drawing on sympathetic case studies to introduce each chapter and presenting complex medical research in a way that is easy to understand. The reassuring and upbeat tone inspires a positive attitude, and the book enables each woman to identify the path that is right for her based on her unique personality and circumstances.

Sudden Death - Stillbirth

Sudden Death - StillbirthThere is a form of sudden death that is shrouded in mystery and sensitivity - stillbirth. This is when the developing infant dies suddenly in the womb. This can sometimes be explained, such as when the foetus chokes after it is entangled in the umbilical cord.

In Singapore, a stillbirth is defined as foetal death after the 28th week of pregnancy but before delivery.

Foetal death in utero (while still in the uterus) before the 28th week is considered a late miscarriage. A full term is typically between 37 and 42 weeks.

Helping HUG (Honoring Unspoken Grief)

Andrea in griefImage by NCBrian via Flickr

Novak noted that people heal in different ways and that the decision to experience another pregnancy is as individual as the parties involved.

"Listen to your heart," Novak said. "Lean on each other; that is what family is for. Most importantly, make sure what you want is really what you want, not what others think you should be doing or feeling. During a difficult time like this, you find out who your true friends are and they are the ones that, regardless of what decisions you make, do not pass judgment or try to rush you into doing something that they think you should do. No matter what, don't rush to make any decisions that will impact the rest of your life, including rushing out and getting pregnant again."

Sarah Ferguson s miscarriage pain

The Duchess of York's late mother Susan Barrantes lost a daughter, Sophia, after developing pre-eclampsia - a condition with is potentially life-threatening which is characterised by high blood pressure - when Sarah was nine, while her sister Jane has lost two children.

Sarah said:
"So we lost our baby sister Sophia. My mother should not have survived either, but thanks to two amazing doctors she lived to be a good parent to my sister and me.

"But that pain of loss, suffered by so many mothers, is almost too much to bear. My older sister Jane also lost two babies - one at six months and the other stillborn. She says there is no greater sadness than being in the maternity ward with everyone excitedly hugging their babies while for you there's nothing to plan except a funeral."

New bid to halt miscarriage misery

A unique research project aimed at helping thousands of couples avoid the misery of repeated miscarriages and other pregnancy complications has been launched by leading medical experts.

Expectant couples at five major London hospitals are to be invited to participate in the so-called "Baby Bio Bank", which will collect blood from both mothers and fathers and samples from the umbilical cord and placentas of babies as well as other detailed medical history.

Researchers hope the bank will act as a resource for major medical research projects across the world examining the causes of recurrent miscarriage, growth problems in the womb, pre-eclampsia, or high blood pressure in pregnancy, and pre-term delivery.

Professor Lesley Regan, of St Mary's Hospital in London, an international expert on recurrent miscarriage, said the four pregnancy complications targeted by the bank should not be viewed in isolation. She said they all had a link.

"I think the change in our understanding is that you don't look at them in isolation," she said.

She added: "We have done studies that have shown that the levels of psychological distress and disturbance in couples who have repeated miscarriages and lose babies is very similar to that in psychiatric hospitals. It really is an enormous burden on people."

Professor Gudrun Moore of the Institute of Child Health and an international researcher on pregnancy complications, said she hoped the bank would act as a database and the project would extend in scope.

She said: "The aim of this project is that in the long term we will save the lives of women and their babies and protect families from some of these birth disorders."

The bank is receiving more than £1 million from the Lord Mayor's Appeal 2008 and hopes to get underway at the beginning of June. The project has been created by the charity Wellbeing of Women.

Currently around 250,000 UK pregnancies end in miscarriage and more than 50% of stillbirths remain unexplained. Statistics also show that one in 13 live births in England and Wales are pre-term and 25% of premature births are caused by pre-eclampsia.

Lawmaker wants miscarriage death certificate

Picture from www.griefwatch.com
Idaho women who miscarry before their pregnancies reach 20 weeks may soon be able to get a death certificateBOISE, Idaho. - Idaho women who miscarry before their pregnancies reach 20 weeks may soon be able to get a death certificate, if a bill approved for further debate in a House committee becomes law.

Midvale Republican Rep. Judy Boyle told the House State Affairs Committee Wednesday such an "early fetal death certificate" would be voluntary for women who lose their fetuses early in their pregnancies.

The committee voted unanimously to give the bill a hearing. Current Idaho law gives women the option of obtaining a death certificate if they miscarry after 20 weeks gestation. The death is not recorded by the Department of Vital Statistics, but a stillbirth certificate can be obtained for $13.

The new certificate in Boyle's bill would also cost $13.

Two miscarriages and stillborn twins.. but Liz could not give up on being a mum

Liz and Alf Beard suffered years of heartache and pain as they struggled to realise their baby dream. But through it all, the couple never gave up hope

Gazing lovingly at her five-month-old son Archie, Liz Beard looks like any new mother proudly showing off her first child.

But Liz's journey to motherhood took five courses of expensive IVF over an agonising eight years and her happy smile hides the pain of two miscarriages and the tragic loss of stillborn twins.

"I'd have done anything to have Archie," says Liz, 37.

"He's proof you have to keep hoping and believing."

Liz and husband Alf's baby quest began in 2000, six months before they married in their home city of Birmingham.

Living near heavy traffic increases chances of miscarriage and newborn death

Women who live near busy streets have an increased chance of a miscarriage or of their newborns dying, reports a study from Brazil. The findings implicate air pollution.

Women living in areas with heavy traffic flow are 1.5 times more likely to lose their babies during late gestation or have their newborns die compared to those who live in areas with less traffic, according to a Brazilian study.

The research finds a positive association between living in heavy traffic areas and risk of losing late term pregnancies or giving birth to a baby who dies during the first week of life. Previous studies have linked air pollution exposure to higher risk of preterm birth, low birth weight and perinatal mortality (i.e., death that occurs between 22 weeks gestation and first six days of life).

No prior studies, however, have investigated directly the effects of residing near these high traffic areas on fetal or infant mortality. Brazil has one of the highest perinatal death rates in the world and some cities in Brazil are highly polluted due to heavy auto and truck traffic.

In this case-control study, researchers compared the addresses of 318 women living in São Paulo, Brazil, who lost their children either during pregnancy or shortly after birth (the "cases") to those of 313 women whose children survived past 28 days (the controls). Mothers with the highest exposure to traffic-related pollution were more likely to have had a child die, and the highest risk was for young infants during the first week of life. The authors, however, could not rule out the potential confounding factors of birth weight or gestational age, which may also be impacted by traffic-related air pollution. Typically, those who live in high traffic areas are also more likely to be smokers, have low socio-economic status and have worse health care; factors that potentially add to the complexity of the observation. This study did not statistically adjust for these factors so the effects may be due to something other than air pollution. Even though, the increased risk is very high and deserves additional studies to find its cause.

Traffic related air pollution and perinatal mortality: a case-control study. Environmental Health Perspectives doi:10.1289/ehp.11679.

Lives, though short, remembered

On Wednesday, a small group gathered at Riverview Cemetery outside of Monticello to remember those who passed before them.

But rather than grandparents or parents who lived full lives, those remembered were babies lost to miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal death, and children lost too soon.

Oct. 15 was National Day of Remembrance, and mothers, fathers, siblings and friends honored the day by joining in a candle lighting ceremony that evening.

A Web site, www.october15th.com/waveoflight.htm, is set up to bring recognition to the Day of Remembrance and the grief shared by parents.

Naperville's 4th Annual A Walk To Remember

NAPERVILLE, Ill., Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Naperville's 4th Annual A Walk to Remember will be held on Sunday, October 19, 2008, at the Riverwalk Grand Pavilion in Naperville. The theme of this year's Walk is "Because of You."

Registration for the Walk will begin at 8:30 AM, a memorial service will be held at 9:30 AM, and A Walk to Remember will start at 10:15 AM, which is a two-mile, leisurely walk along the Naperville Riverwalk.

Walk proceeds will benefit the development of the Wings of Hope Angel Garden at Edward Hospital and the Edward Foundation SHARE Program. The SHARE Program is a national and local non-profit pregnancy and infant loss support group with a mission to raise public awareness, promote research, and provide support to parents and families whose lives have been touched by miscarriage, stillbirth, or neonatal loss.

Each year, 1 out of every 4 pregnancies ends in miscarriage, 26,000
children die as a result of stillbirth in the United States, and another
19,000 children succumb to neonatal death. Thousands of families leave the hospital each year without their child -- with empty arms, broken hearts, and a love for their deceased child that will never diminish. Help SHARE continue its mission touching lives, healing hearts, and developing an angel garden to serve as a place of reflection and hope.

There are many ways to support A Walk to Remember; including walking,
sponsoring the Walk, donating raffle items, and serving as a volunteer.

Those who have experienced a loss and their family and friends are encouraged to SHARE their tears, WALK to honor, and REMEMBER with love.

For more information and to register online, visit napervillewalktoremember.org. The registration fee, which includes a t-shirt, is $25.00 for adults and $15.00 for children, if you register by Wednesday, October 1, 2008. You may also register on the day of the Walk, but the registration fee will increase to $30 for adults and $17 for children and t-shirts will be subject to availability.

Nearly 400 people attended the 2007 Walk, which raised approximately
$24,000 and included a moving memorial service featuring Linda DeYmaz, author of "Mommy, Please Don't Cry," as the keynote speaker, live music, poetry, and a reading of baby names before participants walked for the steps those babies will never take.

Parents Who Lose Babies Find Healing At Brandon Hospital

Their new babys life had ended abruptly at 33 weeksDonna and Eddie Barker already had two boys when they learned a third baby was on the way.

Months later, grief overtook them in an instant. Donna no longer could feel the baby moving. Its heartbeat had faded away.

Eddie Barker raced to the hospital to join his wife.

Their new baby's life had ended abruptly at 33 weeks, sending the Valrico couple into an emotional tailspin. As they struggled to grasp the reality of their loss, nurses on the labor and delivery floor at Brandon Regional Hospital approached the couple, offering to photograph them with the baby.
