Five Miscarriages and a Baby

Privately I've been battling my own set of personal challenges - five miscarriages and a baby...

Maggie is fast approaching two and is the joy of my life. I've had three of my five miscarriages since she was born so the struggle isn't over, but I've come to appreciate how lucky I am.

I have what so many people want but never actually get - an incredible daughter, a loving fiancé and a supportive family that have shared and absorbed my pain where they could (thank-you all).

Each cause is explained thoroughly but clearly, with the information and support women need to improve their chance of future successful pregnancy. This makes the book as relevant for women who have never even been pregnant as it is for women who have experienced miscarriage.

The book presents a detailed overview of miscarriage, dispels common myths, provides flow charts to help reveal the cause of any previous unexplained loss, and offers positive, practical options for action.

It is written from the patient's perspective, drawing on sympathetic case studies to introduce each chapter and presenting complex medical research in a way that is easy to understand. The reassuring and upbeat tone inspires a positive attitude, and the book enables each woman to identify the path that is right for her based on her unique personality and circumstances.

After 16 tries, I finally got the baby I wanted

Image: Mum: After 16 tries, I finally got the baby I wantedMaria Pridmore said the arrival of daughter Mia Shannon was ‘a dream come true’.

The 32-year-old said: ‘After the two I lost and all the miscarriages, I never thought I would be gifted with one. She is so precious to us.’

The cancer nurse lost 16 babies over a 13-year period and gave up on the idea of a family after the stillbirth of daughter Shannon and death of son Kia at the age of two weeks in 2009.

Does pregnancy loss need to be talked about more?

Stock photo by jeinny
Does pregnancy loss need to be talked about more?My first pregnancy ended in miscarriage somewhere around the 12th week. I learned the news when I went in for an ultrasound.

Because of some health risks -- and the fact that my Mom had twins (stillborn at seven months) -- I was in line for a lot of ultrasounds. The first showed one baby, and everything fine.

Four weeks later, I went for another, telling my husband (who had a busy day at work that day) that he didn't need to come with me.

Couple's wish for child comes true

Robert and Araceli Hooker with their new daughter, Kaylyn Hope, on Aug. 20 at their home in Corona. (Jennifer Cappuccio-Maher/Staff Photographer)Araceli Hooker lay on a rented hospital bed - feet up and head down - in the middle of her living room and prayed for a miracle.

Her miracle's name was to be Kaylyn Hope Hooker.

Every day that Araceli's ailing cervix held the forming infant inside her body was one day closer to granting Araceli's constant prayer - Kaylyn would stay alive long enough to be born.

The Corona residents, Araceli and Robert Hooker, had been trying to have a child since they married 10 years ago. Five times, Araceli had conceived, and five times she lost the baby within the first trimester.

Revealing the raw heartache of miscarriage

The possibility of having a miscarriage had never crossed Megan Meanys mind until it happened to her. It’s estimated that one in five families experiences the pain of miscarriage. WNBC traffic reporter Megan Meany — who is a part of that statistic — shares her personal story here as a way to encourage other women to speak up and seek support for their loss.

I had my first miscarriage four years ago. We were trying for our first child. I got pregnant easily and then — wham! — at about six weeks I started bleeding. What a shock that was. I come from a long line of fertile women. I had always loved kids and motherhood was a no-brainer for me. I thought, when I want to have a baby, I’ll have one!

The greatest loss

Recurrent miscarriage

Recurrent miscarriageWhen you have been trying to conceive for one month, one year or several years, the most joyous and happy moment that you can feel is when you see a positive home pregnancy test after missing a period. But the excitement and elation can quickly be erased by the negative news received by a doctor either over the phone or at the office, informing you that you have miscarried. A pregnancy loss or miscarriage is very heart-breaking, frustrating and devastating for any woman to go through once, let alone multiple times.

Young women find support through Early Infant Loss group

Young women find support through Early Infant Loss groupKay Asher knows all too well what it's like to lose a baby. When she was 25 years old she had a stillbirth. About four years later she had a miscarriage. Not only that, but her daughter has had four miscarriages and her daughter-in-law, two. "At that time there was really no support other than the immediate family," Asher said. "And they didn't know what to say."

Seeing a need to provide support to women who have gone through similar experiences, Asher, a licensed clinical social worker, started the Early Infant Loss group, a support group for women who have had a miscarriage, other fetal loss or who have had a baby who died before the age of 2.

New Down's syndrome blood test could put an end to the risk of miscarriage

Lower risk - Mothers wont have the agonising decision over whether to have amniocentesis screening with the new blood testA blood test which eradicates the risk of miscarriages when checking for Down's syndrome is being developed.

Currently, amniocentesis screening is the method for checking the foetus for risk of handicap.

However the highly invasive procedure poses a high risk to the unborn child.

But a research team for the NHS is working on the method of assessing the baby using a sample of maternal blood.

Miscarriage and toxoplasmosis

Miscarriage and toxoplasmosisIf you are pregnant and own a cat, remember to have someone else change the cat litter. Cats are carriers of the parasite that causes toxoplasmosis, an infection caused by parasites transmitted to humans from infected cats.

The parasite lives inside the cat's intestines and is passed into the feces, so changing your cat's litter box puts you at risk. One of the possible effects of toxoplasmosis is miscarriage.

Sharing the loss of miscarriage

Stock photo by creactions
Sharing the loss of miscarriageI have followed the harrowing stories of Eliza Abbaszadeh and Monica O'Grady as one who shares the same pain and carries a very similar scar.

In the very early hours of Jan. 6, 1990, I was awakened by what I knew to be labour pains. I was terrified. I was only 29 weeks pregnant.

My husband and I woke up our 7-year-old twin sons, bundled them into the car, and drove to St. Mary's Hospital in the cold and the dark, in a state of anguish. Our twins were asked to wait down in the lobby with a security guard while I was admitted.

Saliva Test Might Predict Premature Births

Saliva Test Might Predict Premature BirthsTesting of pregnant women’s saliva could help predict if they are likely to give birth prematurely, according to a study to be published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

The study found that women going into early preterm labour (before 34 weeks gestation) had low-levels of the hormone progesterone in their saliva as early as 24 weeks, and these levels failed to rise during pregnancy in the normal way.

Study highlights miscarriage risk

Pregnant women undergoing tests for foetal abnormalities could be up to twice as likely to miscarry if they attend a small hospital unit, according to new research.

Some 30,000 women a year in the UK undergo amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS) to detect possible problems with a pregnancy.

Amniocentesis indicate the likelihood of the baby developing chromosomal conditions, such as Down syndrome or Edward's syndrome.

The test carries a risk of miscarriage and is usually only offered to women when there is a significant risk the baby will develop such a condition.

CVS tests are usually carried out earlier in pregnancy and detect serious foetal problems.

CVS is available to all pregnant women but especially those with a family history of genetic disorders or who are over 35.

The study, involving more than 64,000 pregnant women, found that miscarriage rates were higher at smaller hospital units.

Overall, the miscarriage rate following amniocentesis was 1.4%, and 1.9% following CVS.

But women treated in departments carrying out fewer than 500 amniocentesis tests over an 11-year period had a higher chance of miscarriage than in those attending larger units.

The research, by experts at Copenhagen University Hospital, was published in the Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology journal.

My wife has had five miscarriages

Monty Munford and his wife Emily with their son. Photograph: Monty MunfordBut we are still determined to have another child

When my wife Emily came into the sitting room and told me there was "something in the soap dish" I knew the stomach pains she had been experiencing during the eighth week of her first pregnancy had ended in a miscarriage.

Should I bring the "something" into the sitting room, discuss it with my wife and then make a decision to bury it in a beautiful location? Or should I protect my wife by flushing it down the loo? I went for the latter, enduring the worst existential moment of my life; then I tried to comfort her.

The Miscarriage Test

Tampa (myFOXla.com) - It's such a sad reality some families must face, up to fifteen percent of pregnancies end in miscarriage. Most are due to problems with the DNA. The fetus can't develop normally because of defects in the genes. But when a woman has two or three miscarriages, it may be a clue something else is very wrong. Fox's Dr. Joette Giovinco has more on a simple test that may prevent repeats from happening.
