The greatest loss

Hormonal changes in early pregnancy help a woman bond with a child, which is why she can feel such a sense of loss even if the pregnancy stops early, says Dr Rosalie A Sant Fabre Florence / GrapheastThe emotional effects of a miscarriage can be long-lasting. Miscarriage occurs in one in four pregnancies, but its commonality offers little comfort to the women who experience it. It’s a loss that’s hard to describe and often difficult to come to terms with.

Surviving a miscarriage

Having a miscarriage is not only physically difficult, but it has an emotional impact, as well. It is normal to feel a range of feelings that may include anger, sadness, guilt or shock.

Keep in mind that being around friends and family who have children may be painful.

During this time, it is OK to give yourself permission to miss social gatherings or family events.

Men and women deal with loss differently, so couples need to share their feelings and thoughts openly with each other. A pregnancy loss can affect relationships. It can bring you closer or rip you apart. It is important that you both give yourself time and space to heal. You and your spouse may go through the stages of grief. The grieving process can take days, weeks or months.

Helping HUG (Honoring Unspoken Grief)

Andrea in griefImage by NCBrian via Flickr

Novak noted that people heal in different ways and that the decision to experience another pregnancy is as individual as the parties involved.

"Listen to your heart," Novak said. "Lean on each other; that is what family is for. Most importantly, make sure what you want is really what you want, not what others think you should be doing or feeling. During a difficult time like this, you find out who your true friends are and they are the ones that, regardless of what decisions you make, do not pass judgment or try to rush you into doing something that they think you should do. No matter what, don't rush to make any decisions that will impact the rest of your life, including rushing out and getting pregnant again."

Garden of Hope to open soon

Garden of Hope to open soonDawn Waltman knows first-hand the emotions a mother experiences when losing a child to early infant death.

She and her husband, Brian, who have four living children, have lost three babies — two to miscarriage and a little girl, Molly, in a stillbirth.

"We were able to have a funeral and memorial service for (Molly), but the miscarried babies had nothing," Waltman said last week. "It felt like they didn't count and, in society, they don't count. I felt in my heart that these babies can't be forgotten."

Those interested in following the garden's progress can go to lancastergardenofhope.blogspot.com for updates. Donations to the Garden of Hope can be directed to Waltman at bdwaltman@juno.com.

Miscarriage inspired song to aid Coventry baby charity

Tom McCreery was moved to write new song Little Soul after his wife Diann suffered a miscarriageTom McCreery, of Glasgow trio Oswald, was moved to write new song Little Soul after his wife Diann suffered a miscarriage.

Now he is trying to spare other couples the heartbreak he and Diann faced by donating the cash raised by the song to three baby charities, including Coventry-based Baby Lifeline.

Tom wrote the song in just 20 minutes on the night Diann lost their baby.

“The whole song seemed to write itself musically and lyrically,” he said.

“It was just a pure outpouring of emotion and honesty. It was my way of coping with the loss of our little baby.”

The song is available from
www.oswaldtheband.com . To donate to one of Oswald’s chosen charities visit www.babylifeline.org.uk , www.uk-sands.org or www.springsupport.org.uk .

Grieving a Miscarriage

Grieving a MiscarriageSeveral asked about miscarriage: Why won’t people stop saying “you can try again soon”? What is the “right” amount of grief? Are there more miscarriages now or does it just seem that way? What to tell the children about the baby who will not be?

I put these questions and others to Donnica Moore, an Ob/Gyn who is founder of the Sapphire Women’s Group and editor of the newly released book, Women’s Health for Life.” (I am also using this post to put these questions to readers, so please add your thoughts and advice below.)

Bringing Hope to Others

Andrew and Kara Krauss have started at nonprofit organization Hope Is ... to help others who have suffered through miscarriages and infertilityIn the beginning of December 2006, Kara miscarried.

"It was the worst thing that ever happened to us," Kara said on their Web site hopeisheart.org.

"I wanted to figure out a way to help because my heart just breaks for people who can't have a child," she said.

So, she and Andrew founded "Hope Is ...," a nonprofit agency geared toward supporting couples with infertility or those who have had miscarriages. They also raise funds to help couples seeking to adopt.

Dads Deal with Miscarriage Too

Miscarriage is not just something that women endureI think most people view miscarriages as something that only affects women, I know I did. I didn’t let myself grieve or really examine what had happened because everyone rallied around my wife. It wasn’t until months had passed that it hit me—like a ton of bricks.

My Story:
We were almost three months along and on a vacation with the family when my wife told me that something wasn’t right. It was just before noon when she started to notice blood.
